On Wednesday 6 July 2016, during NAIDOC Week, the staff of RBGC organised for children visiting the Gardens at Cranbourne to paint calico squares as part of the celebrations for Koolin-ik ba Kirrip-buluk (Family and Friends).
The children painted 64 calico squares with lots of colour and symbols. Catherine Ashton (Visitor Programs Officer) and staff suggested to the Botanical Fabricators Group that it would be fabulous to create quilts using the painted squares to make them suitable for future displays.
Four quilts each of 16 squares were created by members of Fabricators, Wendy Smart, Lee Baker and Jan Penpraze. The first two completed were to be displayed at an Indigenous Literary Day in the local Library on 8th September.
