Join us for this interesting Discovery Day tour, on Monday 12 August, meeting at 430 High Street, Kew. The tour commences at 9.45 for 10 am, and finishes about 3pm. Parking is available in Parkhill Road and High Street.
The tour will commence at historic Boroondara Cemetery, with Helen Page. This cemetery was laid out in the late 1800s as a garden cemetery, and is thought to be Australia’s first garden cemetery. In the early 1900s it was the place to go on a Sunday because it was so beautiful. Over the decades since, the garden has merely been “kept tidy” and has suffered blanket-spraying with herbicide.
The Garden is now being restored to its former glory, following advice from members of the Heritage Rose Society. This Friends tour will cover both horticultural projects and also visit the graves of several horticultural identities who are buried in the cemetery.
At 12pm the tour will travel to Studley Park for BYO lunch, followed by a tour of the fascinating plants and geology of Yarra Bend Park with author Leon Costermans. The Yarra Bend Park includes basalts originating from two separate volcanic flows, as well as Silurian mudstone and sandstone sediments.
To take part in this voyage of discovery, book via the WINTER 19 Booking Form.
Prices: Members $50, non-members $55 and students $10.
