On June 5, 2020, Marjanne Rook, the Cranbourne Friends coordinator of the Growing Friends group, has been recognised by the City of Casey as their World Environment Day 2020 Volunteer.
In an online presentation Marjanne Rook was acknowledged for her dedication and long-term contribution to the work of the Growing Friends. Another Growing Friends volunteer, Shirley Smith, provided pre-recorded testimony to Marjanne Rook’s unfailing commitment and organising skills.
The Growing Friends propagate a great variety Australian native plants from cuttings, divisions and seed, throughout the year .Plants may be sold to members, the public, local council, etc. Proceeds are used by the Friends to support selected projects for the Gardens. Plants are also used for educational and revegetation purposes.
Marjanne Rook has been with the Growing Friends for twelve years and has coordinated the group for much of this time. She acknowledged that it was a ‘bit of work’ with lots of organising and weeding! She worries about each new seasons’ production until they are all safely sent off, happy that they have not succumbed to possums, pests or pestilence.
Just this week the group handed over the annual plant order for the City of Casey- usually given away to local households to promote gardening with Australian plants. Due to Covid, local kindergartens will now be the beneficiaries … working bees will abound.
Marjanne Rook was gracious in her inclusion of all the current and past Growing Friends members in this recognition. We congratulate her on this well-deserved accolade.
