SUMMARY:Open House: Rescuing eucalyptus
DESCRIPTION:Jilliga Ash Eucalyptus stenostoma Conservation Field Trip\nIn October 2025\, Amy Downie (Horticulturist\, Melbourne Gardens) and Ollie Sherlock (Natural Systems Officer\, Cranbourne Gardens) supported the Threatened Species Conservancy on a conservation mission to save the endangered Jilliga Ash Eucalyptus stenostoma which grows on cliffs in the beautiful and remote Wadbilliga National Park in Southern NSW. It grows up to 25m and lives for up to 400 years\, but does not have the post-fire regeneration capability of other trees. \nPopulations of the tree were devastated by the Black Summer bushfires in 2019/20 and had failed to regenerate well from seed after the fires. \nIn 2024\, Threatened Flora Ecologist Dr Stan Wawrzycek spotted a copse of the trees that had survived the fires growing on a 300m high escarpment\, high above the Tuross River in Wadbilliga National Park\, but was unable to access the trees to collect seed and genetic samples due to the steep and high risk environment. \nAmy and Ollie brought specialist rope access skills to the 2025 trip\, which were critical to safely access the trees and collect seed. The collected seeds are now stored in seedbanks and used to establish ex-situ conservation specimens in Victorian and NSW Botanic Gardens. \nCome along to the Elliot Centre on Thursday 9th July to hear more about this amazing conservation story. \n  \nAs this is an Open House event\, it is free and open to Members only. \nAfternoon tea will be provided following the presentation. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information: \nhttps://cranbournefriends.tidyhq.com/public/schedule/events/85500-open-house-rescuing-eucalyptus \n

SUMMARY:Open House: Our National Parks - a history and their future
DESCRIPTION:Our National Parks: A history and their future.  \nVictoria’s National Park estate has been fought for and won over many years.  What threats are they are under from development and under funding? \nJoin us this August at the Elliot Center for a fascinating talk by Jordan Crook\, a Parks and Nature Conservation Campaigner from the Victorian National Parks Association. \nJordan’s work focuses on protecting and caring for our wildlife and natural places. His background in conservation work ranges from the ocean to the tall forest of the Central Highlands\, and he has worked with all levels of government to get results for the natural world for many years. Jordan teaches conservation and land management at a tertiary level and has an academic background in conservation and land management\, arboriculture and training and assessment. \n  \nAs this is an Open House event\, it is free and open to Members only. \nAfternoon tea will be provided following the presentation. \nFor more information: https://cranbournefriends.tidyhq.com/public/schedule/events/86301-open-house-our-national-parks-a-history-and-their-future
