DESCRIPTION:Rejuvenating a National Treasure: The Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum \nThe Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum (BBGA) occupies a unique place in Australia’s horticultural history as the nation’s first botanic garden dedicated exclusively to Australian plants. Renowned for its legacy collections spanning many major plant groups\, the garden has nevertheless fallen into decline and is now in urgent need of renewal. This illustrated talk explores BBGA’s remarkable story and outlines a clear\, practical vision for its rejuvenation and renewed prominence. \nThe talk on Thursday May 14\, 2026 at 2pm in the Elliot Centre\, will be presented by John Arnott\, well known to the Cranbourne Friends and our current Vice President. \nJohn brings decades of experience from leading public gardens including Melbourne Zoo\, Geelong Botanic Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. He is the principal author of BBGA’s Living Collections Plan and a familiar voice as a regular host and presenter on the 3CR Gardening Show. \nAs it is an Open House event\, it is free and open to Members only. \nAfternoon tea will be provided following the presentation.

SUMMARY:Open House: Pookila Reintroduction by Dr Phoebe Burns
DESCRIPTION:          \nThe Pookila (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) has not been recorded at what has become the RBGV Cranbourne site since 1976 and was thus considered locally extinct.  There was probably a complex play of extinction factors but predation by cats and foxes was likely to be a significant factor. Of course that has been radically reduced by the predator-proof fence that surrounds our Cranbourne Gardens and so it was selected as suitable for reintroduction of what was once known as the New Holland Mouse. Formerly common in heathlands throughout much of south eastern Australia the Pookila conservation status is now considered threatened. \nRBGV has been working with Zoos Victoria and Moonlight Sanctuary in a team led by Dr Phoebe Burns to establish a genetically diverse population that will hopefully flourish at our secure and well managed conservation zone. A population of 30 has had a controlled release and it is envisaged that it will become a source of new populations that can be released into other suitable sites in the future. \nJoin Dr Phoebe Burns for a presentation on the Pookila reintroduction program and an update on progress to date. \nElliot Centre 2:00 – 3:00pm with Afternoon Tea to follow. \nPhoto:  Rohan Clarke
